A week of events in Oxford to commemorate the 350th anniversary of Thomas Traherne's death

Open for 30 minutes before and after events at Brasenose.

Choral Evensong, Brasenose College Chapel

Sun 20 Oct   6.00 to 7.00 p.m.   Free & unticketed.

Sung by Brasenose Chapel Choir with a hymn by Thomas Traherne as the anthem.
Preacher: Bishop David Thomson, Chair of the Traherne Association, on ‘The Faith & Spirituality of Thomas Traherne.’

Traherne Creative Translation Workshop, Amersi Room, Brasenose College

 Mon 21 Oct   5.00 to 7.00 p.m.   Free event, but registration required.

Join us for a collaborative multilingual experience – open to speakers of all languages including English. Participants will work together to share and re-imagine a Traherne poem in other languages, and through this experience to reflect on the poem and its cultural resonance. Please note that this workshop is open to all, regardless of linguistic background.

The workshop will be led by Charlotte Ryland of The Queen’s College Translation Exchange, with contributions by Gwyneth Lewis, former National Poet of Wales, and Professor Ana Elena González-Treviño (UNAM-UK and KCL), translator of Traherne's Centuries into Spanish. Sung by Magdalen College Choir, with two recently commissioned settings of Traherne by the internationally-renowned composer Nico Muhly, ‘An Habitation of Thy Love’ and ‘On All Things’. Free and unticketed.

Traherne Poetry in Print Workshop, Bodleian Old Library

Thurs 24 Oct   3.00 to 5.00 p.m.   Registration (£5) required.

Participants will have instruction in setting metal type and printing a poem by Thomas Traherne, using the hand-operated presses in the Bodleian Bibliographical Press, within the Old Bodleian Library. You will make a keepsake to take home.

With readings, mini talks (Dr Sarah Apetrei, Campion Hall; Dr Kathryn Murphy, Oriel College; Professor Simon Palfrey, Brasenose; Dr Julia Smith, The Oxford­­ Traherne; Roger Wagner, artist), display of artwork by Roger Wagner and Brasenose students, and music from Brasenose College Choir.

Teddington 

The parish of Teddington, Middlesex, where Traherne was buried in St Mary’s church on 10 October 1674, has several events, including a Requiem Eucharist on 10 October, and a Celebration & Commemoration Evening of readings and music on 12 October. Full details can be found here.
